"This piece is very special to me because of its vulnerability. I'm so used to having multiple instruments to create an atmosphere, but this time I couldn't hide behind anything but the piano… and for 7 long minutes at that.
I remember asking the Director, “Just the piano, are you sure?” knowing very little about the film at the time, yet having that universal concept of difficult relationships that all of us experience in some form or other. That was my main focus while navigating the process of writing this piece.
I surprised myself A LOT. I was constantly sharing with the Director to make sure it was on the right track… he was great about sharing imagery, which helped me develop the musical theme and tone. I hope this piece achieves the intention of the story…I hope people will hum it by memory after listening to it, ha!
